Is the school uniform mandatory in France? The answer is no in public schools. However, the answer is different for private schools. The number of schools that require uniforms is increasing.
Why and how do they do this in practice?
Since 1968, the wearing of uniforms in France has been abandoned in public schools. With the exception of military high schools, which continue the tradition imposed by Napoleon, and a few other institutions, the choice of dress is therefore left to the students of France.
In this respect, our country is different from many others. In fact, in Asia or the United KingdomIn fact, in Asia and the United States, girls and young men still wear skirts or dress pants in most schools.
However, the issue of school uniforms regularly returns to the forefront. Thus, in 2017 and 2021, the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer positioned himself in favor of a return of the uniform in school. While specifying: "that the establishments are free to be able to do so".
If there is tolerance, which some mayors have been able to seize, such as the one in Provins, the rule remains that no dress is imposed in public schools.

This is not the case for public schools. They cannot change the rules of procedure to impose uniforms: this would go against the principle of free and compulsory schooling until the age of 16.
Private institutions, on the other hand, may set their own rules, depending on their pedagogical and educational objectives. Some, for example, limit themselves to imposing a dress code, which is less restrictive but which sets out what is and is not permitted in terms of clothing.
